Abstract:
The status of the science institution in Iran is a function of the more general status of Iranian society, including the influence of Iranian social ethics. The general claim of the article is that brokerage, as one of the most important cultural practices of Iranians, which initially has economic origins, has spread to other social fields, including the field of science. In addition, although brokerage as a defective form of mediation is an obstacle to economic production in a healthy economy, brokerage in the scientific realm is also an obstacle to scientific production as an incorrect form of healthy scientific transfer. This article, relying on Simmel's theory of form, and based on historical evidence and sources of developments in the institution of modern science in Iran, and documents and memoirs of scientists, and research reports and official statistics in the field of science, shows that since the beginning of the entry of modern science into Iran, a form of brokerage has been formed in the realm of science, and what can be called the "form of hand-to-hand" has become the main form of the framework that shapes the mentality and actions of members of the scientific community in Iran. According to this form, members of the scientific community simply “hand over” the findings of previous scientists to subsequent individuals without any added value, and for this valueless transfer, lacking innovation and scientific diligence, they receive benefits and rewards in the internal mechanisms of the scientific community. The Islamic Revolution, with its focus on self-belief and self-reliance, could have been an important historical moment for overcoming this form in the realm of science, but evidence from the post-revolutionary period shows that despite some successes, the form of hand-over still dominates the general relations of the scientific community in Iran.
