Among social scientists, Durkheim is perhaps the most famous sociologist who has studied religion through the lens of functionalism and his studies has been and are cited by most researchers of the field. Although Durkheim’s functionalist approach can by useful and somehow liable against those who consider religion inefficient in modern life, the reality of religion and deep studies show that his reductionist approach failed to show the reality of religion and even its functional aspect, but also his superficial and super-structural studies has made most researchers unable to well understand the substance of religion which is the origin of most social outcomes. Among the views of Muslim thinkers, the present paper chooses the view of Allamah Tabatabaii, who is not only an expert of religion but also aware of functions of religion, to evaluate Durkheim’s functionalist view and compare these two thinkers’ views in order to show that the reality of religion is not in such a low position that Durkheim could provide it to researchers and seekers of reality through studying it externally. دین به منزله‌ی واقعیتی انکارناپذیر، از جمله پدیده های اجتماعی است که مورد مطالعه‌ی بسیاری از دانشمندان علوم انسانی و اجتماعی قرار گرفته است. شاید دورکیم از میان اندیشمندان اجتماعی، معروف ترین جامعه شناسی باشد که دین را به گونه‌ی کارکردگرایانه مطالعه کرده است و تحقیقاتش در این زمینه مورد استناد بسیاری از محققان قرار گرفته و می گیرد. البته نگاه کارکردی دورکیم هرچند ممکن است در مقابل کسانی که دین را در زندگی مدرن ناکارآمد می دانند سودمند و تا حدی پاسخ گو باشد، مطالعه‌ی عمیق و واقعیت دین نشان می دهد که رویکرد تقلیل گرانه‌ی دورکیم نه تنها نتوانسته حقیقت دین و حتی جنبه‌ی کارکردی آن را نشان دهد، بلکه تحقیقات سطحی و روبنایی او موجب شده تا بسیاری از محققان نتوانند گوهر دین را که منشأ بسیاری از پیامدهای اجتماعی است به خوبی بشناسند. نوشتار پیش رو، از میان اندیشمندان اسلامی دیدگاه علّامه طباطبائی را که هم تخصص دینی کافی دارد و هم از کارکردهای دین غافل نبوده است، جهت ارزیابی نگاه کارکردگرایانه‌ی دورکیم برگزیده است تا در پرتو تطبیق اندیشه های این دو اندیشمند، نشان دهد که حقیقت دین در چنین حد نازلی نیست که دورکیم از مطالعه‌ی بیرونی آن بتواند در اختیار محققان و تشنگان حقیقت قرار دهد. https://marefatefarhangi.nashriyat.ir/sites/marefatefarhangi.nashriyat.ir/files/article-files/2005381.pdf
